Maundy Thursday commemorates the last supper of Jesus with his disciples on the evening of his arrest and trial. The word "maundy" comes from the Latin mandatum, from which we derive the words "mandate" and "commandment." The command that Jesus gave his disciples and (us): Love one another as I have loved you. 

After partaking of the supper, we will remember, through scripture and music, the events that transpired leading to Jesus' betrayal, denial, and death. The distinguishing feature of the service is the extinguishing of lighted candles after each reading. The Office of Tenebrae (Shadows), which dates back to the fourth century, ends with the sanctuary in complete darkness.
